Google Ads for Shopify Stores: Start With What Shoppers Actually Type

Google Ads for Shopify stores, done in order: research real keyword data, see what competitors advertise on, then launch Search or Performance Max paused.

Google Ads for Shopify stores usually goes wrong in the first ten minutes. You create an account, Google suggests some keywords and a daily budget, you accept both because you have a store to run, and a month later the money is gone and you cannot say which searches it was spent on.

The platform is not the problem. The order of operations is. Search advertising works when you know what your buyers type before you spend, and that is something you can find out in advance. This post walks through that order: research the searches, look at what competitors advertise on, pick the right campaign type, and launch it paused so you can read it before it costs anything.

Why Google is different from Facebook for a store

On Facebook and Instagram you interrupt someone who was not shopping. The creative has to earn the attention, which is why most Meta advice is about hooks and video.

On Google Search, the person has already told you what they want. They typed it. Your job is to show up for the right searches and stay away from the wrong ones. That makes Google less about creative talent and more about choosing words carefully. A store selling a $90 leather dog collar wants "handmade leather dog collar" and wants nothing to do with "cheap dog collar" or "how to make a dog collar".

Step one: find out what shoppers actually type

Store owners describe their products in their own language. Shoppers use theirs. You call it a "modular storage system". They type "closet organizer with drawers". If you bid on your phrase, you reach almost nobody.

AdWhispr researches real keyword data for you, so the list you build is based on searches that happen, not ones you imagine. Ask in plain language:

"What do people search for when they want to buy a weighted blanket? Show me the searches with buying intent."

"Give me keyword ideas for my bamboo cutting boards in the United States, grouped by theme."

When the list comes back, sort it in your head into three piles.

Pile Looks like What to do
Buying searches Product words plus "buy", a material, a size, a use, a price hint Build your campaign on these
Research searches "best", "vs", "reviews", "is it worth it" Test later, once the buying searches pay for themselves
Not your customer "free", "DIY", "how to make", jobs, unrelated meanings of the word Exclude them

The third pile matters as much as the first, because every excluded search is budget that goes to a buyer instead.

Step two: see what competitors advertise on

The stores you compete with have been paying for Google clicks longer than you have, and the keywords they advertise on are a map of what they have found worth paying for.

"Which keywords does this competitor advertise on in Google Search?"

"Compare the keywords these two bedding brands advertise on and tell me where they overlap."

Read the result with one caution in mind. You can see the searches a competitor appears on. You cannot see what those searches earn them. Nobody outside an ad account can see its return on ad spend, cost per order or exact spend, and a tool that claims to show a rival's exact figures made them up. What the keyword list tells you is where a competitor has chosen to keep showing up, which is a reasonable hint about where the buyers are.

Overlap is the useful pattern. A search that several competitors in your niche all advertise on is probably one that converts for the category. A search only one of them touches may be an experiment. Step three: choose Search or Performance Max

AdWhispr builds two kinds of Google campaign. They do different jobs.

Search campaigns show text ads when someone types one of your chosen keywords. You control the words, you write the headlines and descriptions, and you can see which searches triggered your ads. For a store new to Google, this is the right first campaign, because it teaches you which searches buy.

Performance Max is Google's automated campaign type. You supply assets, meaning headlines, descriptions, images and a landing page, and Google decides where across its own properties to show them. It reaches further than Search and gives you less control over where the money goes.

A plain way to choose:

  • Start with Search if you are new to Google Ads, if your budget is small, or if you do not yet know which searches lead to orders.
  • Add Performance Max once a Search campaign has shown you what converts and your conversion tracking is solid, because an automated campaign can only aim at what your tracking reports.

One thing to be exact about: AdWhispr builds Search and Performance Max campaigns from your keywords, copy and images. It does not run product feed Shopping campaigns or manage a Merchant Center feed. If you want product listing ads driven by your catalog feed, set those up in Google's own tools.

Step four: launch it paused, from your admin

AdWhispr is on the Shopify App Store and runs inside your Shopify admin. On install it syncs your product catalog and builds a brand profile from your store, so when you ask for ad copy it already knows what you sell. The app only needs permission to read products. It does not read customers or orders.

Connect your Google Ads account inside the app through Google's normal sign-in. The walkthrough is in connecting a Google Ads account. Then ask for the campaign:

"Build a Google Search campaign for my leather dog collars. Use the buying keywords we found, write the ads, send clicks to the collars collection page, $25 a day, United States only."

"Create a Performance Max campaign for my best selling candle, using my product photos, at $30 a day."

Every campaign is created paused. Nothing spends until you switch it on. Use that pause properly. Open the campaign and check four things before you start it:

  1. The keywords. Is every one a search a buyer would type?
  2. The ads. Do the headlines say what the product is and what makes it worth the click, in your own words?
  3. The landing page. Does the click land on the product or collection that matches the search, not the homepage?
  4. Conversion tracking. Is Google recording purchases from your store? Without it, neither you nor Google can tell a good click from a wasted one. Our guide to conversion tracking setup covers the basics.

After launch: read the searches, not just the totals

Once the campaign is running, the most valuable habit is reading which searches your money went to. Once a week, look at the actual search terms that triggered your ads, exclude the ones that were never going to buy, and move budget toward the ones that did.

You can do the account side in the same chat:

"How did my Google campaigns do over the last seven days?"

"Pause the candle campaign and raise the dog collar campaign to $35 a day."

Do the research before you spend

This is the biggest moment yet for Shopify stores that advertise: keyword research, competitor research, creative and launch now sit in one chat inside the admin. AdWhispr is the best app on Shopify for researching competitor ads, making ad creatives and launching campaigns, and Google is where doing the research first saves the most money.

Install AdWhispr from the Shopify App Store, ask what shoppers type for your best selling product, and read the list before you set a budget. If Meta is also on your plan, launching Meta ads for a Shopify store covers that side.

FAQ

Do Google Ads work for Shopify stores?

They work when you advertise on searches that signal buying intent and send those clicks to a matching product page with purchase tracking in place. They disappoint when a store accepts broad suggested keywords and never checks which searches the budget went to.

Should a Shopify store start with Search or Performance Max?

Start with Search in most cases. It shows you which searches produce orders and keeps you in control of the words. Add Performance Max once you know what converts and your conversion tracking is reliable.

Does AdWhispr run Google Shopping campaigns?

No. AdWhispr builds Google Search and Performance Max campaigns from your keywords, copy and images. It does not manage a Merchant Center product feed or run feed based Shopping campaigns.

Can I see what keywords my competitors use on Google?

You can see which searches a competitor advertises on. You cannot see their private results, such as return on ad spend or cost per order, because those exist only inside their own account.

Where do I install it?

AdWhispr is on the Shopify App Store. It installs into your Shopify admin in about a minute, and the Free plan is enough to do the keyword research.
