This page covers your own Google Ads account: keyword research, launching Search and Performance Max campaigns, and tuning them once they run.
Everything is created paused. A Search or Performance Max campaign is built complete but with delivery off. It starts spending only when you resume it, and resuming asks you to confirm. Keyword, bid, negative and location changes all show a preview first.
Before you start
- Connect Google Ads. Say Connect my Google Ads account in the chat, or open Settings, then Connected accounts, in the dashboard. Sign in with the Google account that has access to your Google Ads account; you grant access on Google's own consent screen.
- Use a regular account, not a manager account. Manager (MCC) accounts oversee other accounts and cannot hold campaigns. If you connect through a manager, launch into one of the regular accounts under it. Google Ads account ids are the digits you see in Google Ads, for example 213-214-8460.
- Billing must be set up on the account in Google Ads.
- Performance Max also needs conversion tracking on the account, because it bids toward conversions.
Google Search campaigns have no objective to pick: you bid per click on the keywords you choose. Locations are the only targeting; the keywords are the audience.
Keyword research
Before you spend, ask what people actually search for and what a click costs. The chat returns real Google Keyword Planner data: average monthly search volume, top-of-page cost-per-click ranges and competition for your seed terms. Country (United States by default; also GB, CA, AU, DE, FR, ES, IT, NL, IN, BR, MX, JP) and language (English by default) are optional.
What keywords should a chiropractor in Austin target, and what do they cost per click?
Top ideas for "chiropractor austin": "chiropractor near me" (about 12,000 searches a month, 4.10 to 9.80 per click, high competition), "back pain relief austin" (900 a month, 3.20 to 7.50), "sciatica treatment austin" (400 a month, 4.00 to 8.90). Want me to launch a Search campaign on the ones that fit your budget?
You can also ask what a competitor's site is about: "what keywords is competitor.com about?" returns the keywords Google associates with that page's content. That is a picture of what the site could target, not its live bids, which Google does not expose to anyone.
Search campaigns
One request builds a complete, paused Search campaign: the campaign, an ad group, your keywords and a responsive search ad. You need:
- Keywords, one or more (from your research or your own list).
- At least three headlines, each up to 30 characters (up to 15).
- At least two descriptions, each up to 90 characters (up to 4).
- A landing page (full https address).
- A daily budget in the account's billing currency.
Optional: a max cost per click (the default of 1.00 is usually too low to win auctions; set it from the research CPC ranges), a match type (phrase by default; broad or exact on request), and locations (United States by default; name a country, region or city and the chat looks up Google's location id).
Launch a Google Search campaign called "Austin chiro" on "chiropractor near me", "back pain relief austin" and "sciatica treatment austin" to https://riversidechiro.com at 25 a day with a max CPC of 5. Headlines: "Austin Chiropractor", "Same-Day Appointments", "Back Pain Relief", "New Patients Welcome". Descriptions: "Gentle, evidence-based care for back and neck pain. Book online in 60 seconds.", "Most insurance accepted. Walk-ins welcome this week."
Preview: campaign "Austin chiro", one ad group, 3 phrase-match keywords at 5.00 max CPC, one responsive search ad with 4 headlines and 2 descriptions, United States (default), 25.00 a day, created paused. Create it?
Responsive search ads are the creative test. Google mixes your headlines and descriptions into different combinations and shows more of the ones that get clicks. Giving it several distinct headlines (one with the keyword, one with a benefit, one with an offer) is how you test copy on Search. There is no need to launch several ads.
Campaign names must be unique in the account. If one already exists with the same name, Google refuses the launch; resume or edit the existing one, or pick a new name.
Performance Max
Performance Max runs across Search, YouTube, Display, Gmail and Maps with Google choosing the placements. AdWhispr generates the assets from your saved brand: headlines, long headlines, descriptions, landscape and square images, and your logo and business name. You usually only need to give a name and a daily budget.
Launch a Performance Max campaign called "Linen PMax" at 40 a day.
I generated 5 headlines, 2 long headlines, 3 descriptions and 2 images from your Cloud Linen profile. Preview: campaign "Linen PMax", landing page cloudlinen.com, United States (default), 40.00 a day, created paused. Create it?
Two checks happen automatically before the preview: the account must have conversion tracking set up, and your AdWhispr brand profile must have a logo and a website. If either is missing, the chat tells you what to fix. You can override any of the copy, add search themes, and set locations.
Keyword management
Once a Search campaign runs, three changes fix most problems. Each shows a preview and waits for your confirmation.
Pause, re-enable or re-bid a keyword. Refer to the keyword by its text as it appears in the campaign. The preview shows each keyword's quality score and last-7-day spend.
Pause the keyword "free chiropractor" and raise the bid on "chiropractor near me" to 6.50.
Preview: "free chiropractor" (quality score 3, 42.10 spent in 7 days) will be paused. "chiropractor near me" (quality score 7) max CPC 5.00 becomes 6.50. Apply?
Add negative keywords. Searches that should never trigger your ads, added at the campaign level. Phrase match is the default (any search containing the phrase stops matching); exact and broad are available. Negatives only ever reduce matching, so spend on junk searches falls. The preview also shows the negatives already in place, so ask once before suggesting new ones.
Create a new ad group. When one ad group holds mixed themes, quality score drops for every keyword in it. Split the themes: the chat creates a new ad group with its own keywords and its own responsive search ad whose headlines contain those keywords. Then pause the same keywords in the old group, naming the old group, so the two do not compete for the same searches.
Move my sciatica keywords into their own ad group called "Sciatica" with headlines that mention sciatica, then pause them in the old group.
Created ad group "Sciatica" with 3 keywords and a new responsive search ad (paused with the campaign). Now pausing "sciatica treatment austin" and "sciatica chiropractor" in the ad group "Austin chiro". Preview shows both; apply?
Why a campaign is not spending
Ask "why is my Google campaign not spending?" and the chat drills into that campaign for per-keyword delivery diagnostics: quality score, keywords bidding below Google's first-page estimate with the bid that would fix it, keywords rarely shown, and approval issues, plus concrete guidance. A campaign spending far less than its budget is almost always a keyword problem, and the diagnostics say which keyword and what to change.
Location edits
Read or change the countries and regions a Google campaign targets. Ask to see the current locations, then add or remove places; the chat looks up Google's location ids, previews the change and applies it after you confirm. On a live campaign, added locations start serving immediately. This works for Google campaigns only; on Meta and TikTok, locations live on the ad set and are set at launch.
Add the United Kingdom to the locations on my Austin chiro campaign.
Current: United States. Preview: add United Kingdom (id 2826). The campaign is live, so it starts serving there as soon as this is applied. Apply?
Pause, resume and budgets
- Pause stops spend immediately, no confirmation.
- Resume goes live and starts spending; the chat warns you and waits for a confirmation.
- Budget changes are previewed, then applied.
Two kinds of Google campaigns cannot be changed from the chat: Video (YouTube) campaigns, which Google does not allow to be paused or edited through its API, and experiments (a trial attached to a base campaign), where Google locks status, dates and budget. Change those in Google Ads directly.
Policy realities
Google reviews every keyword and every line of ad text against its ads policies, at launch and again after edits.
- Policy rejections. When Google rejects a keyword or text, the chat shows the policy and, when Google provides it, the flagged text. Remove or reword it and launch again. If the term is essential to your business (some health, financial and trademark terms), request a policy exemption inside Google Ads. Details: POLICY_ERROR.
- Manager accounts cannot hold campaigns. If a launch says the action is not permitted, you are in a manager account; launch into a regular account. Details: ACTION_NOT_PERMITTED.
- EU political ads. Google requires a one-time self-declaration of whether a campaign runs EU political ads before it accepts certain edits. Complete it in Google Ads and try again.
- Smart campaigns that already target a radius around an address cannot also target fixed locations. Manage those in Google Ads, or use a standard Search campaign.
- Billing. A suspended account or a missing payments profile blocks every write until it is fixed in Google Ads.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to pick an objective for a Search campaign?
No. Search campaigns bid per click on the keywords you choose. Performance Max bids toward the conversions your account tracks, which is why it needs conversion tracking.
How do I test ad copy on Google?
Give the responsive search ad several distinct headlines and descriptions. Google rotates the combinations and favors the ones that earn clicks. That is the creative test.
Why does my campaign get no impressions?
Almost always because the max cost per click sits below Google's first-page estimate, or because quality scores are low. Ask "why is my campaign not spending?" for the per-keyword diagnosis and the bid Google estimates would fix it.
Can I launch in a language other than English?
Keyword research supports several languages, and you write the ad copy yourself in any language. Google reviews it against the same policies.
Can AdWhispr change my YouTube campaigns?
No. Google does not allow Video campaigns to be paused or edited through its API. Search, Performance Max and Smart campaigns in the same account work normally.
