Most guides about ChatGPT and Meta ads stop at the writing part. ChatGPT drafts your primary text, suggests a few hooks, maybe explains why your cost per result went up. That's useful, but it's ChatGPT guessing. It can't see your ad account, and it can't see a single ad your competitors are running today.
Connecting Meta ads to ChatGPT properly means fixing both. Your own account flowing in, and the public Meta Ad Library, every competitor's live Facebook and Instagram ads, flowing in beside it. Then ChatGPT can go from "who's winning in my category" to a paused ad sitting in your account, ready for you to switch on.
As of today, that's one click. AdWhispr is now in ChatGPT's app store. This guide covers how to install it, what to ask first, how launching works on Meta, and the Meta errors you're most likely to hit. If you use Claude instead, the same guide lives at how to use Claude for Meta ads.
What "Meta ads in ChatGPT" actually means
There are two different connections hiding under one phrase.
Your account, in. A connection to your Meta ad account lets ChatGPT read campaign results, change budgets, pause and resume, and create new campaigns. That's the half most people picture.
The market, in. The most useful Meta ads data isn't in your account. It's in the Meta Ad Library, where every active ad from every brand is public, and where browsing it is slow enough that most people never really do. That half is what AdWhispr was built for, and we made the full case for the research side here.
AdWhispr does both in one chat: competitor research from the Ad Library, and launching and managing ads in your own Meta account. So the research and the launch share one conversation, and ChatGPT never has to make up a competitor.
Step 1: Install AdWhispr in ChatGPT
- Open the AdWhispr listing in ChatGPT's app store. You can also find it inside ChatGPT: go to Settings, then Plugins, then Browse Plugins, and search for AdWhispr.
- Click Install.
- Sign in to AdWhispr when ChatGPT asks, or create a free account. No credit card, and no API key to copy.
- Start a new chat and type "Who has the best ads in my space?" to check it's working.
This is a normal sign-in. AdWhispr never sees your ChatGPT conversations and ChatGPT never sees your password. If you already use AdWhispr in Claude or on the web, sign in with the same account and your saved brand and tracked competitors come with you.
There's no Developer mode to turn on and no address to paste. The older custom-connector route still exists for workspaces that only allow custom connectors, and the ChatGPT connect guide covers both.
Step 2: Connect your Meta ad account
In the same chat, type:
Connect my Meta ad account.
ChatGPT sends you a link. You sign in on Meta's own screen and approve access, then ask "Which ad accounts can I launch into?" to see what's linked. You can also connect from Settings, then Connected accounts, in the AdWhispr dashboard. Connecting is free.
On the Meta side you need three things:
- A Facebook Page. Every Meta ad runs from a Page. With one Page it's picked automatically; with several, name the one you want.
- A payment method on the ad account, set in Meta Business Manager.
- A Meta pixel on your site, only if you want a sales campaign. The pixel is attached automatically, and ChatGPT tells you if there isn't one.
You don't need the ad account for research. Step 3 works without it.
Step 3: Research what's already working on Meta
Don't start from a blank brief. Start with the ads your competitors keep paying for:
Who has the best ads in my space? I sell linen bedding.
AdWhispr saves your business and checks, the moment you ask, which brands in your category are running ads right now, ranked by how many. These aren't names ChatGPT remembers from training. If you already know who you're up against, just name them, or paste their Facebook Page.
Then pull the winners:
Show me [competitor]'s longest-running active ads and break down
the hook, format, tone and offer on the top three.
The ads appear right in the chat, sorted by how long they've been running. That's the number that matters. The Ad Library doesn't publish click-through rate, cost per click or return on ad spend for anyone else's ads, so AdWhispr never shows them. What it does show is days running, and brands don't keep paying for losers for 150 days. We wrote up why days running is the performance signal to trust.
A few more prompts worth pasting:
Compare [brand A] and [brand B] on Meta. Who is testing more,
and whose offer changed recently?
Search [competitor]'s ads for anything mentioning free shipping.
Write me a brief on [competitor]'s Meta ads: hooks, format mix,
how long their winners run, and what I should test first.
The Ad Library covers Instagram placements too, so the same research works for Instagram. If that's where your category fights, see finding competitors' Instagram ads. For more research prompts built for ChatGPT, read ChatGPT ad research workflows.
Research is read-only. It touches no ad account, so it's the safe place to start.
Step 4: Turn the winner into your own creative
Found an ad that's been running for 200 days? Make your own version of it.
- Clone it: say "make my own version of that ad for my brand". AdWhispr makes it, as an image or a video with your product in it, and ChatGPT hands you the link to it in the AdWhispr app. The finished ad lands in your Creative Library. Back in ChatGPT, ask to see your creatives and launch it from the chat.
- Your own creative: upload your images and videos to the Creative Library in the AdWhispr web app and launch them the same way.
Only the picture comes from the clone. When you launch, ChatGPT writes fresh primary text for your product and points the ad at your own page. The competitor's words and link are never used, and competitor creatives are never launched as they are. Where the line sits is covered in how to clone a competitor's Meta ad and the cloning guide in our docs.
Step 5: Launch on Facebook and Instagram, paused
What gets built depends on the creative you bring:
| You have | What gets built |
|---|---|
| An image clone from the AdWhispr app | Campaign, ad set and ad |
| Your own images or videos (including videos made in the app) | One image: a single-image ad. Two to ten images: a carousel. One video: a video ad. A mix: a creative test |
A launch prompt looks like this:
Launch my image "Spring duvet" on Facebook at $30 a day, traffic objective.
Primary text: "Cooler nights start here. Linen duvets, 20% off this week."
Every launch works the same way. ChatGPT shows you a preview of exactly what it will create: the Page, the link, the copy, the budget, and the targeting, with anything you didn't mention marked "(default)". You confirm, and the campaign, ad set and ad are created paused. Nothing spends until you say "resume it", and resuming asks you to confirm again.
A few things worth knowing:
- Objectives: traffic (the default), sales, awareness or engagement. Lead-form ads aren't launched from chat yet. See choosing objectives.
- Creative tests: name a video plus a couple of images and each becomes its own ad in one shared ad set, so Meta moves budget toward the winner. Walkthrough: running a creative test.
- Budget sits on the ad set, in your ad account's own currency.
- New ads go through Meta's own checks, so "created" doesn't mean "delivering" yet. Ask "is my ad running?" and ChatGPT reads the real status from your account, including any reason Meta gives for holding it back.
The step-by-step version is in how to launch a Meta ad from chat, and every option is on our Meta reference page.
Targeting your Meta ads
Targeting is opt-in. Say only what you want and everything else stays on Meta's defaults. Before a targeted launch, ChatGPT looks up the real options on Meta, so nothing is guessed:
- Interests: "people interested in yoga" turns into real Meta interests. You pick, then it launches.
- Places: countries, or specific cities and regions (Meta won't mix a country with a place inside it).
- A radius around an address: "everyone within 10 km of my shop". See radius targeting for local businesses.
- Age and gender.
- Retargeting: use your existing Custom Audiences, or build a website-visitors audience from your pixel. See retargeting website visitors.
Launch "Bedding UGC" as a video ad at $25 a day, targeting women
aged 25 to 45 in the UK who are interested in interior design.
Ads about housing, jobs or credit are a special case. Meta requires them to declare a special ad category and removes age and gender targeting. AdWhispr handles this for you, and the preview tells you what changed.
Step 6: Keep it running from the same chat
Once it's live you can check results, pause, resume, change the budget or change locations just by asking.
How are my Meta campaigns doing over the last 30 days?
You get spend, impressions and clicks per campaign, from your own account, so the numbers are real. Pausing is immediate. Budget and location changes show a preview first, and resuming always asks. When results dip, "what should I run instead?" goes straight back to step 3 in the same thread. The full workflow for spotting waste is in reading performance and cutting wasted spend.
Meta errors you might hit (and the fix)
When a launch fails, ChatGPT shows Meta's real message plus one sentence on what to do. The common ones:
- "Please authenticate your account": Meta wants a security check on the Facebook profile. Fix it here.
- "Session has expired": the connection died after a password change. Reconnect.
- "Facebook Page is missing": the Page is unpublished or your profile has no role on it. See the fix.
- "Budget is too low": Meta has a minimum daily budget per ad set in your currency. Details.
- "Too many API calls": too many changes too fast. Wait it out, don't retry.
- "Disabled accounts can't create or edit ads": billing or policy hold on the ad account, fixed in Business Manager. What to do.
- Custom Audience terms: the first audience in an ad account needs Meta's terms accepted once. Where to accept.
- Could not geocode address (radius targeting) and Singapore verification have their own pages under troubleshooting.
FAQ
Can ChatGPT run Facebook ads?
Yes. Install AdWhispr from ChatGPT's app store and connect your Meta ad account, and ChatGPT can launch Facebook and Instagram ads (created paused), read results, and pause, resume, retarget or change budgets from the chat.
Is it safe to connect my Meta ad account to ChatGPT?
You sign in on Meta's own screen, and AdWhispr never sees your Facebook password. Every launch shows a preview and waits for your yes, everything is created paused, and resuming asks again. Research questions never touch your account.
Will ChatGPT spend money without asking?
No. Nothing spends until you tell it to resume a campaign, and it confirms with you first.
Can ChatGPT see my competitors' Facebook and Instagram ads?
Not on its own. With AdWhispr it reads a brand's ads from the Meta Ad Library, sorts them by how long they've run, and breaks down the hooks, formats and offers. It won't quote a competitor's click-through rate or ROAS, because Meta doesn't publish them.
Can I clone a competitor's ad in ChatGPT?
Yes. Ask for your own version of the ad and AdWhispr makes it, image or video, with your product. ChatGPT links you to it in the AdWhispr app, and you launch the finished ad from the chat.
Do I need Developer mode or to know what MCP is?
No. Install it from ChatGPT's app store and sign in. That's the whole setup.
Does it work for other platforms?
Yes. The same app launches and manages campaigns on Google, TikTok, X, Reddit and ChatGPT Ads, and researches TikTok ads and Google keywords. For the Google side, see connecting Google Ads to ChatGPT, and for the full loop across platforms, how to run ads from ChatGPT.
Who uses this?
Thousands of businesses run their ad research and campaigns through AdWhispr.
